Road Runner Sports stealth credit-card charge
Posted: Fri Jan 21, 2005 4:37 pm
A couple of years ago I signed up for Road Runner Sports "Run America Club", which basically gets you 5% off everything for a year $25. Well do the math, you need to spend $500 at their store in a year in order to come out ahead. Yes, the club offers a few other benefits too, but they don't interest me.
The thing that bugs me is that they silently and automatically renew your club membership every year with a new charge to your credit card. Even though I hadn't bought anything there in a long time, a $25 charge from Road Runner Sports mysteriously appeared on my credit card bill this month. I had to take time to call up and specifically tell them I wanted to NOT be in the club. Grr...

Are you sure it get's renewed automatically. I joine the RAC several years ago and after the first year my membership lapsed. I found out when placed an order and didn't get the RAC discount. I contacted them to tell them I never recevied a notice about my membership needing to be renewed (I think my SPAM software filtered it and I didn't catch it). They apologized and renewed my membership for 2 years for free. They also credited me the discount.
True, it only helps if you plan to spend $500 or more. But if you wear a shoe that cost $100+ like I used to (Saucony Trigon) and need to stock up on summer and winter apparel and other "stuff" you'll reach $500 realy quick. That year I actually spent almost $1000. I bought a lot of stuff for my kids and wife (i.e. stuff for skiing). So, if you shop for other's too then, again, you may pass the $500 threshold very quickly.
I don't intend to renew my membership again since I haven't bought much lately. In fact, I don't think I purchased anything from RRS in '04. I pretty much stocked up in '03. I guess I'll need to keep a close eye on my credit card statement.

Yes, it is automatic. In fact if you call their customer service number, the very first thing you'll hear is a recording explaining to everyone why they suddenly have an unexpected charge from RRS on their credit card. Maybe yours didn't auto-renew because your credit card information changed?
