Race Listings
Posted: Fri Jan 21, 2005 5:36 pm
If you look at the top toolbar, you'll see there's now a searchable race listings area. At the moment there are only a few races in the database, until I have time to enter more, or find a good way to automate the entry process.
If you've got a favorite race or two that aren't in the list, please go ahead and enter them! There's a link on the search page for adding new races. Obviously the more races that are listed, the more valuable the list will be for everyone.

Cool, dude. So, like, how's it going to work? Will searches need to be an exact match on zip code or city, or are you matching against a database to define pre-specified mileage radiuses (radii?) If the latter, why not let us define what the mileage radius should be?

Oh, oh. It also won't let me add a race. It says that only moderators have update rights. I'm, like, so majorly bummed. :-( I never get the rights to do anything.

A search by zip code will find any race within 50 miles of that zip code. If you want to cast a wider net, you can also search by state (or country). Eventually it might be possible to do a user-selectable radius search, but right now it's too slow to compute the distance between every pair of zip codes every time someone does a search, so each zip code has a static list of "neighbors" that are within 50 miles.
The city search must be an exact match on the city name. Its primary purpose is for narrowing down searches for races outside the US, where zip code proximity searches won't work.
The "moderators only" problem is fixed now, if you want to try submitting a race listing. Anyone can submit a race to add to the list, as long as they're logged in.

Nice! I never realized how difficult it can be to come up with a zip code for some races until you actually try to find it. I was impressed that the database populated the zip code field for me when I left it blank for my entry. 50 miles sounds like a good default, and a fair price to pay in return for faster system response times.
