Blizzard Forces Cancellation of Boston Prep 16 Miler
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Sat Jan 22, 2005 10:50 am
Expected blizzard conditions in New Hampshire tomorrow have prompted the cancellation of one of New England's most popular races. The Boston Prep 16-Miler is a challenging course that annually draws a crowd of serious marathoners planning to run at Boston. The forecast of heavy snow and blizzard conditions have forced officials to cancel the race on just one day's notice, disappointing and angering some runners. Entry fees for the race are non-refundable.

This is a huge disappointment to anyone who worked hard to prepare for the event, but given the ugly weather forecast, it wouldn't be safe to go forward with the race. It's also understandable that entry fees can't be refunded, since most of the organizers' expenses are up-front costs-- money that's already been spent. Still, it's a rarity when an event of this size is cancelled on such short notice. A few years ago when the Washington DC marathon was cancelled at the last minute, a dedicated group went ahead and ran the race anyway.

I ran 4.4 miles yesterday in 4.4 degree weather with snow pelting me in the eyes the whole way. I don't think I would have wanted to do 16.

Brrr! How much snow did you get? It looks like most of the northeast got pretty buried.

It's one of those times where it's hard to say, because there's so much drifting of the snow...no level surfaces. We probably got 10 - 12 inches over the last 24 hours, but the drifts were 3' in front of my garage and on my front walk when I woke up this morning. No running for me today, and tomorrow is the beginning of my formal marathon training cycle. Fortunately, it's a rest day!

It looks like they've rescheduled the race for February 16th. Let's hope the snows stay away this time!
