my ugly feet Posted: Mon Feb 20, 2006 10:03 pm

I was looking at my 3-year-old daughter's feet the other day. They are the epitome of feet: smooth, rounded, 5 plump toes. As it happened I was also barefoot, and the obvious comparison to my own feet was not flattering. They're gnarled and coarse, with huge callouses, veins, grooves, sores, black toenails, and the works. They may be functional, but they're not attractive! :-)

Anyone else have a shameful secret to share?

Hmmm, it doesn't sound like my feet are quite as narly as yours but I tend to get nasty callouses. I've found that a large emory board (specifically for callouses) does wonders to soften my foot callouses and make my feet a bit more tolerable to look at. I try to use the emory board once every couple of weeks. I should probably do it more often.

If I could just get my nails to stop falling off then my feet would be pretty decent. Actually, I ran four marathons last year and only lost two toe nails. I haven't lost one in quite some time. Either I'm getting better at taking care of my feet before I do my long runs or my nails are just getting thicker.

My wife keeps telling me to go with her to get a pedicure and that there's no reason to feell shy about it. She claims they can do wonders for my feet. I've been waiting for my last toe nail to grow back completely and then maybe I'll consider it.
