Recently I've started worrying more about carrying some kind of ID while I'm out on a run. While it's not exactly likely, I do worry about what might happen if I were hit by a car, or became suddenly ill or injured for other reasons, and I had no identification on me. I'd end up as a John Doe at a hospital somewhere, while my family wondered what had happened. Does anyone else worry about this, or am I too paranoid? I have an engraved metal tag from Road ID. It has my name, address, and 4 different contact phone numbers on it. It's small (about an inch), and fits on my shoe. You can also get ones that go around your ankle, wrist, or neck if you prefer. The foot one seems to work best for me, though-- I don't even notice it's there. Any other good solutions?

I use RoadID too. In fact, I have two for different pairs of shoes so I don't have to move it back and forth between shoes. I can't imagine any better idea. Mine have my Name,Addres, Phone, Blood Type, and "No Known Alergies" included on it. Though I do worry about whether or not someone attending to me will notice the small tag attached to my shoe. I think they need to make the velcro strap out of something brighter. I'd like to get one for my dog's collar but it won't fit his current collar (width). My dog's name tag used to "click" with his rabbies tag and was annoying. So we simply stuck a lable on the back of the rabbies tag that has his name and contact information. We have to replace it every so often, which is a bit of a pain. The RoadID for my dog would be a great solution if I could get a colar that would work with it, or a tag that would adjust for his collar. I've written to them suggesting that they address this but after a polit reply I haven't heard or seen anything offered.

It seems like you could rig up something for your dog collar, couldn't you? My RoadID is just a metal plate with a slit cut into both ends. It comes with velcro pieces to thread through the slit and attach to your shoe, but you could put your dog collar through there instead. Or if the collar is too thick or wide, get a small s-hook or carrabiner to connect it to the RoadID indirectly.

The problem is the collar is too wide to fit throught the slots. And I can't use an S-hook because I don't want the tag to hang loos and jangle against his rabbies vaccine tag. I did a quick look at the pet store once but couldn't find a suitable collar that was thin enough. I was thinking that if the RoadID folks created the tag attached to an elastic sleave then maybe the collar could slip through the sleeve and still be held tight to the collar. Or maybe the should just sell a dog collar in different lengths custom designed to accomidate the RoadID. The collar could be treated with that reflective material as an added bonus so it can be seen by cars at night. Okay, now back to running....

Yeah, I've always carried some kind of I.D. ... Where do you get the "RoadID" from? Sounds better than carrying my State DL.

Yup, they are there, But they were $19.99. I think I'll wait a little bit before getting one... look around, if there is any where else to look.

Yeh, the price has gone up since I bought my first one (I think it was 12.99) and I think the second one I bought was 16.99. See if you can find one of those booths at the mall that engraves things and see if they have something that will do; for less. Though it could be tough to find something that could be attached to your shoe like the RoadID. That's the only way I can use it (attached to my shoe). I can't stand to have something hanging around my neck bouncing while I run or always having to remember to stap it around my anke, or whatever. The one that attaches to you shoe is simple; attach it and forget it.

That's my concern, though. I rotate through at least 3 pairs of shoes during the course of an average week. I know I'd never remember to switch the thing from one pair of shoes to the next, and can't bring myself to spring for the cost of 3 of them. Do they offer volume discounts? Rickshaw, can I earn you a commission if I order via a link from your site? You might earn 23 cents or something!

We've got some good ads going with this topic now. I've just been offered wrist restraints, just in case I get too carried away with my running. This way, my family can strap me to my bed when I start talking about heading out on a 20-miler!

I remember being stopped by the police when I was 17 and running at night through town. The cop wanted to know who I was running from. Not sure if you are better off with or without ID for things like that.

Wow, did you look especially scared or dangerous? What did you tell him?

I guess that's still better than being accused of stealing something...

A friend of my was stopped by the police one night. He was not a runner, and was only trying to get home from around the corner. The cop asked him why he was running, and he replied "Because it's bloody cold!".
