E Pace for VDOT vs. HR ... Posted: Sat Feb 12, 2005 6:53 pm

Perhaps someone could help me on this.

According to Daniel's, at E-pace, my HR should be 64-79% of Max.

But I find that if I run at the E pace suggested for me by my current VDOT (as of a test 3 wks ago) there is no way I can keep my HR in that low of a range. I'm up in the mid-high 80% range. I've done a max HR test and have a pretty good idea of where it should be. All the other intensities (M/T/I/R are within range).

What's wrong here?
1. Are Daniel's E-paces aggressive? Doubtful.
2. Is this a sign of overtraining? Doubtful, given my schedule over the last 3 wks.
3. Could this result from not getting enough Recovery runs in during the week? Possible, I've been doing more Quality and less long runs.

My Questions:
a. Anyone else having a similiar experience?
b. Should I lower my E pace to keep in the HR zone?
c. Should I stick to my VDOT E pace anyway, assuming the tables are correct?

Baffled,
Zeb

I don't normally check my HR during easy runs, but when I do I usually have the same problem as you. While Daniels offers the HR ranges as a general guide, he also goes on to say that he doesn't recommend using HR as a basis for training. Too many other factors can affect it, like temperature and hydration.

If you're pretty certain your VDOT is correct, then I'd stick with your E pace from the table, and don't worry about the HR too much.

I've had pretty much the same experience as you and Rickshaw. I swear I could get my heart rate up to 64% of max by walking quickly. I've chosen to ignore the heart rate guides, and instead follow the VDOT tables. It FEELS ok, so it can't be too far off.
