purging my running stuff
Posted: Fri Jun 03, 2005 4:21 pm
I had the day off today, and I decided to spend some time purging my closet of excess running stuff. It was a little bit ridiculous. I had 7 pairs of running shoes, 9 (nine!!!) complete sets of technical fabric t-shirts, shorts, and socks, 3 singlets, 4 long-sleeve technical t-shirts, and probably 20 old cotton race t-shirts. I donated most of the shoes and race shirts to Goodwill, and since I'm not running 9 times a week anymore, I put all but a few of the running clothes sets into storage. My dresser went from being packed to the gills, to have an entire drawer empty.
I have really been a bad boy when it comes to training over the past couple of months. Last year was a milestone for me-- I trained consistently all the way through, and averaged better than 50 mpw for 2004. I carried that through the first few months of this year, but since March my weekly mileage has dwindled to essentially zero. I've also gained 11 pounds from my low weight of last summer. My lethargy is partly from a lack of desire to run, and partly from a lack of opportunity at my new job. Fortunately I'm moving to a new work site with an on-site gym beginning next week, so maybe I'll squeeze in some workouts during lunch.

Rickshaw...don't let it happen...don't let the flame burn out. You had such a productive year with such good race results. I know how tough it can get when family and work demand so much of your time. I've been there...but when I reflect back on it now I know that there was actually plenty of time to get in "some" running. I just didn't try very hard.
I don't mean to belittle how demaning the rest of your life has been lately. I just hate to see you do what I've done so many times in the past. I tend to get side tracked by something else and always seem to have an excuse not to get my run in. In fact, back in 2001, after having fallen off the running wagon several times in the past, I was resolved not so much to train for and run NYC but to continue running after the marathon and through the winter without taking more than two weeks off. I did it...and continue training that year and ran my PR at NYC the next fall. But then six months later I got distracted by a home improvement project that "seemed" to eat up all my spare time in the evennings and weekends for three months. So...I fell off the wagon again. So, it seems I'm always playing catch up and just as I get back to where I left off the time before and I'm hitting new PRs something gets in my way. So...my life long goal is not to let that happen.
So, maybe you need to find something new to motivate you? Swimming? Biking? A running club? How about getting involved with coaching other runners (i.e. start or assist with a program at the Y or a local recreation center). Maybe if you volunteer for some local races you'll rediscover that inner spark.
Good luck!

Wow, I've got about 5 pairs of athletic shorts, 2 pairs of Nike Shox, and just old tee shirts...

As much as I need to purge my old race t-shirts I feel the need to hang on to them to use around the house when I'm doing really messy, grungy work around the house or yard. I was glad to have one to waste when I did some work on my garage door openner and ended up getting a bunch of lubricant on it (doesn't wash out). I was able to just toss it in the trash when I was done.

Rickshaw - I echo "mfox." Don't let the flame burn out completely. I know I did. I engrossed myself in work back in the late 90s thinking I had plenty of time to get back in shape. Then, bang. In 2001, very much overweight, a heart attack. Good health doesn't wait for anything. Exercise has to be a priority. You don't have to run races; but do something every day to keep yourself fit. Pretty soon your enthusiasm will return and you'll be in a better position to get started again rather than from ground zero.

I have been getting back to running a bit this past week. After a couple of months of near zero running, I've started running every other day for the past week. Nothing much-- just 4 miles at an easy pace each time, but it's enough for now. I feel better now that I'm not totally neglecting running.
