new Road Runner Sports store Posted: Wed Apr 12, 2006 7:42 pm

Road Runner Sports is opening a new San Francisco area store this month, and it's only a couple of miles from my house. I hear their original store in San Diego is awesome, and I've bought tons of stuff from their web site. They're having a grand opening celebration week after next, with celebrity runners and lots of prizes. Should be cool!

Has anyone ever been to their San Diego store?

You are too lucky! Don't spend your mortgage payments on new shoes, though. It may prove addictive having a great running store so close to you!

Hmmm...I don't know if they're as great as they once were. I need to compare more of their prices, but I just got their catalog and see their VIP pricing (10% discount) of the Garmin 205 is MORE than the price most other people are selling it WITHOUT a discount. It's about $30 more than what I paid. Keep in mind...that's their VIP (not even RAC) price.

I've been finding that their prices aren't any cheaper (or not much) than other online stores. In fact, National Running Warehouse (I think that's the right name) is always cheaper than RRS. And to get the cheaper prices you have pay for eithera RAC or VIP membership. But the cost savings don't kick in until you've spent several hundred dollars (easy to do for most of us).

I visited the new Road Runner Sports store this morning. Wow, what a disappointment! For "the world's largest running store", it wasn't very big at all. The merchandise was spread out more than normal, like they didn't have enough to fill the space. They had a good selection of shoes, and an okay collection of clothing, but that was about it. Their inventory of watches and sunglasses was tiny, and they don't even carry things like water bottles. They had one jogging stroller, and a sad-looking stock of Gu. There were no books, no Body Glide, no Gatorade mix, no anything really except shirts and shoes. Even the running section of my local sports generic megastore is better than this. I won't be back.

That's really strange. You would think they would have just sent over a plenty of everything in their warehouse before they opened the store to the public. Or could it be that this store is intended to be a place to liquidate only the stuff that isn't selling so well on their web site. Sort of like the Factory Outlet equivalent.

One thing I love about Road Runner Sports is their customer service (the storefront may be different). Whenever I've had an issue no matter how trivial they've always exceeded my expectations in resolving it. I've complained to them on more than one occasion about how I often receive an e-mail with a discount offer shortly after I've already made a purchase. I've explained to them how it makes it difficult for me to decide when to take the plunge and buy something. Do I buy it when I think I need it or wait a little longer in hopes an e-mail will soon show up with a discount code. Though they don't have a fix for that they have given me the discount every time I've called. They don't get into lengthy discussions and make you explain and argue for why you think you were "wronged." Not only do they fix it but they often go a step beyond. For example, my RAC membership once expired one year without me knowing. I never saw the e-mail they sent (actually, it was filtered by my anti-SPAM software) and when I ordered something that I thought I was getting my RAC discount it ended up being billed at the normal rate. I called to complain and not only did they credit me back the amount that my RAC membership would have saved me they also renewed my RAC membership for free (about a $35 value at the time).

Unfortunately, as I pointed out earlier, their prices aren't always such a good deal even when you have paid for the benefits of the VIP or RAC discount.

Yeah, their catalog does have a great selection, although as mfox pointed out, their prices aren't always the best. This new retail store seems to be a far cry from their catalog, though. But I spoke to another runner this weekend who'd been there and was impressed, so maybe they've added more inventory since I visited. If I'm in the area next time I need more running stuff, I'll take another look.
