singlets? Posted: Sat Apr 29, 2006 10:04 pm

What's your opinion about singlets? Do you ever wear them for workouts or races? I own one, but basically never wear it, because I think it looks bad on me. The front chest cut-out plunges really low and shows off lots of my unattractive chest. :-) So I always wear running t-shirts.

At Boston I got to thinking that this was a bad idea, though, and that the extra cooling provided by a singlet might be significant. Maybe I just need one that fits better. I'm racing a 5K tomorrow, so I'll wear my singlet there and conduct a very unscientific experiment into its benefits relative to the coolmax t-shirt.

I definitely wear singlets in the summer to maximize cooling, even though I have a very buff physique (sp?) similar to your own, Rickshaw. For one hot race I was very bold and actually wore no shirt at all. I felt a bit silly, but was comfortable, and hey, if the high school kids can do it, why can't OldManRunners?

I'm turning more towards your outlook on singlets. I was glad to have one today during the warm weather for the 5K, and I don't think I looked as goofy in it as I once did. Maybe I'm just getting more used to the idea of singlets.

Yeah, I've never liked the way I look in a singlet either. Maybe I'm not wearing the right kind. I wore an UnderAmor sleevless skin tight top during my last triathlon last summer and though it not only looked a lot better on me but it also felt very comfortable.

I've been doing some Brix workouts lately where I do an easy 15-20 mile ride (16mph) and then immediately do either a 3 or 6 mile run. I wear a special triathlon bike short (thin pad in the crotch and seat) and it's been very comfortable for running. In fact, I'm considering switching to these type of shorts for all of my training runs (perhaps the type without the pad). They don't ride up on me like my RaceReady shorts do sometimes, especially when they get soaked in sweat. What I love about my RaceReady shorts is the pockets that I can keep stuff in (Ipod Nano, gels, etc). But they make tri-shorts that have pickets too.

How do the tri shorts differ from "regular" running shorts, other than the padding? Are they cut differently, or made of a different material? I have a variety of running shorts from New Balance, Nike, and a few other companies, which all seem fine. Some of the New Balance ones have pockets, which I use for long runs or races for holding gels. The rest are pocketless.

Regular running shorts are loose and flap in the wind. Tri shorts are made of spandex and hug your skin. I'm sure you've seen folks wearing them at races. They wick moisture away just as well as regular running shorts. They come in different inseem lengths (like regular shorts). Best of all, these type of shorts prevent chaffing during long runs.

I always wear singlets! For me, they are comfortable and wick away the sweat.
Try some from here if the others seem uncomfortable. I use them all the time and they are great, plus they have some cool sayings on them....

My main issue with singlets is that the neck/chest cutout is too low, exposing my upper chest most of the way to my nipples (can you say that word on tv?). If I were a woman, it would show way too much cleavage. Other singlets I've seen don't seem to be cut quite as low, though, so maybe I just have some bad ones. I like the singlets with the sayings on them from your store-- seems more interesting than just a plain solid color. Where's my Runworks discount? :-)

Mention you heard about them from mrbill on a running forum (Runworks). That's really all I can suggest!
Good luck and I think you'll like them. It is not MY store, I just love their products.
