10k report from Rustyboy...yeah, only 10k!

Howdee all...
I have returned from my first race under 15k in...jeez, 3 years? It was a street race alongside the ocean in Santa Monica, run by myself, my wife, and 3 of our mutual friends.
Seeing as it was the 1st annual "Save The Bay" 5/10k, flukes were to be expected, and from the getgo, we got 'em. Firstly, the start was nowhere NEAR where the map detailed, so we wound up walking about 1.5 miles to stumble upon it (we weren't the only ones wandering Santa Monica in search of it). The start was to be signaled with the blowing of a conch shell, which, after 3 attempts to no avail, was switched to the classic. "On your marks, set, go!"
I set my goal on breaking my (incredibly pathetic) 45 minute PR for a 10k, so I set myself up in the 7mile/min corral and trotted along. Mile 1, "7:04" was announced, so I was on pace, pretty much, pounding the streets of Venice on a sunday morning, passing coffeeshop after coffeeshop of poseurs, barely clapping us on between latte sips and screenplay revisions.
Mile 2 pushed us to Ocean Ave, above the PCH, with a magnificent view of the Pacific. The salt air swirled through my lungs, refreshing and cool, as I hit mile 2 at 14:05, cutting some time, but I knew there was a lllloooong , gradual climb ahead, so I reduced pace as I felt the increase of grade.
Miles 2.5-4 were on a steep 4% grade, so I concentrated on breathing, knowing that, at the turnaround, I'd make up my time, and as I switched back at mile 4, I hit it. Hard.
Donwhill all the way, I passed my wife and our friends on their way up the hill, relishing in their cheers as I concentrated on my now, 6:30 pace. My wife, as she passed, screamed, "You GO, McGarry!" to which I responded, "No, McGarry, YOU go!", to which she responded, "No, YOU!". She looked so happy on her way up, and I felt a surge of pride in her attempt, as she rarely runs beyond 4 miles consecutively.
Smelling the barn door at mile 5, I slammed on the accelerator and gave chase to a runner who'd passed me 1/2 a mile prior. Drafting him, I kept up the pounding pace and hit the finish at 43:12, a new PR. No exhaustion, no nausea, I knew I'd run my race, and knew if I'd really pushed it, could have broken 43 without a problem.
I awaited our friends and my wife at the finish and saw them all trounce across the line, all smiled, my wife flashing the "rock goat horns" at the photographer snapping shots right before the chutes.
I was happy with my pace, as I'm not a speed demon by any means, as I finished 11th in my age group of 80.
2 weeks from now, I go for my 5k PR. Expect a race report that involves vomiting.

Very nice, Rustyboy! I love it! It's the rare race where you can jam the accelerator all the way through the final miles and finish really strong, but you did it. Excellent run, and a huge new PR! And I don't consider a 45 minute PR incredibly pathetic at all, and 43:12 even less so.
It must have been a thrill to run with your friends and wife too. Does she race often?

*laugh* I can see it now

Yikes, I hope not! After today's 10K, you should be ready to bust a move in two weeks. Give 'em hell!

"You GO, McGarry!" No, really...YOU GO! Nice job Rustyboy. You ain't so Rusty, huh?
I've noticed that there aren't nearly as many 10K races around her as there are 5K, 5M, and Half Marathon's. I haven't run a 10K in several years because they're so infrequent.

Around here, 5K and 10K races are very often part of the same event, with the 10K described as a "race" and the 5K as a "run/walk", although both are timed and scored. Pure 10Ks are indeed rare.

Great job Rustyboy! That's a hell of a PR breakthrough! If there's vomiting involved in the upcoming 5k, maybe you could record it for all of us, sort of a la Phedippidations?

Thanks everybody!
It was a helluva way to break a PR. In answer to your question, Rickshaw, no, my wife doesn't race very often (she did a 5k trail Turkey Trot last year while I did the 15k), but we are both participating in the Malibu Tri in September. She's been running for many, many years, and is in fantastic shape, but she just cannot stand the lone training and hours out there by yourself. To each his or her own: I love that time training with me and only me.
I'll fill ya in on the 5k, but I'm breaking 20 minutes if it kills me...and it just might.

Good luck with the 20 minute barrier! That one's a big motivator for myself as well, with my PR of 20:26. So close, but so far... Let's hope you both break 20 minutes and live to tell the tale! :-)

That makes three of us. My 5K PR is 20:06 on a course with a sizable hill. I'm in no shape to run that fast now but I usually am by the time that race roles around in October.
There are only a few races each year that I focus on really running my best: Staten Island Half Marathon, local town 5K, and NYC Marathon. They're all within about a one month span. The rest of the races I enter are usualy run as training or recovery runs...and the fact that I need to run 9 NYRRC races to get automatic entry to the next year's NYC Marathon.

Great job, way to run YOUR race. Well thought out and executed. Congratulations to you, your wife, and your friends. I love a good PR early in the morning...
Good report as well!
