Trying to gear up again!
Posted: Mon May 29, 2006 6:15 am
Hi, all -
Well, I'm trying to get geared up for another half-marathon race in the next few weeks. I've been pretty lax for the past few months having to deal with the move of my four grandkids from here in Colorado all the way to the state of South Carolina and a wife who is having a really tough time dealing with it. Emotionally it's been draining. So my next race will probably be pretty slow but I need to get involved in one or I'll gradually lose all my motivation to run races. Planning for a race is gives me a goal to work for.
There are about three in the next few months that I'm looking at. One I ran last year and had a lot of fun doing, the Georgetown to Idaho Springs half marathon, and the other two are the Estes Park half marathon and what's called the Slacker Half Marathon near Georgetown, Colorado. My plan is to run mostly easy runs, gradually increasing my mileage, intersperced with a few tempo runs. I'll let you know if I succeed in accomplishing my plan.

Good luck Terry! I can imagine it would be rough having your grandkids move away, if they were previously close by and visited often. You may need to prepare for big phone bills now! A "videophone" call also work great for keeping in touch with young kids who won't talk on the phone. We have a Beamer (brand name), but you can also do it with a webcam, your PC, and some free software.
Estes Park is at a pretty high elevation, isn't it? I'd imagine that would make racing there tough. Are the other races you're considering also at high altitude? I agree it's important to always have at least one or two races on your calendar to look forward to. It helps motivate you to get out the door and run on those days you might not feel like it.

Best of luck to you!
The best thing to get your mind back in focus for me is to start another training program.
Great move....
