Training innovations - am I mad? Posted: Tue Dec 11, 2007 7:24 am

Just seen an article on some of the best training innovations of recent times, and the HRM is not mentioned. Am I mad, or is this not one of the most useful tools? It was this blog at www.runflux.worpress.com

I think you meant www.runflux.wordpress.com. Worpress seems to be a domain squatting site.

Heart rate monitors are nifty devices, and I use one every now and then, but I also think they can be an unnecessary distraction. If you've been running for any length of time, you're probably able to estimate your heart rate pretty well just by your perceived level of exertion. In a couple of races that I did with a HRM in which I tried to keep my heart rate in a particular range, it didn't work out very well. I spent too much time looking at my watch, felt nervous about it, and never really got in "the zone."

Hi
Coincidentally that same blog (there aren't that many I read, but this is one) has mentioned perceived exertion as a good way of monitoring - er - exertion (duh), which I have always done without really giving it any value or using it objectively. Thanks for pointing this out, it makes sense!
