what time do you run? Posted: Wed Dec 22, 2004 1:55 pm

I do most of my weekly training runs in the morning or at lunch time. That's when they fit my schedule best, but I actually feel like I have the most energy in the late afternoon about 5:00 or so. Too bad there are no afternoon races! What time of day do you normally do you runs, and do you think you perform better at different times?

i think there is a big difference between a saturday or sunday morning race/long run and getting up and running before work. i have my best runs on weekend mornings, but can barely function for a weekday training run so i run after work during the week.

ps. i had a great 5k race in the evening once and look forward to a 6 pm 5k new years eve...

With a wife and four kids, I have to guard my time carefully. I would feel like I'm "cheating" them by spending evenings at the gym, running, etc. I don't feel that I'm cheating them if they are asleep though, so I get up at dark-thirty and run. I'm not a morning person, but I do find that it gives me energy for the rest of the day!

Since I have my own legal practice with my office in the house, my work schedule is busy but not rigid. Accordingly, I get to run at different times during the day. In the winter I try and run in the afternoon to take advantage of the afternoon heat. In the summer I run in the early morning. In the Spring and Fall I'm not restricted by the weather so I run as the day permits.

Your schedule sounds perfect. Do you ever find that you have more energy for running at certain times of day? That what seems to be the case for me.

I have to admit that my schedule is pretty good. Most of my clients aren't local and most of my client contact is via email or phone. While my work is time sensitive, most of the time I am in control of my daily schedule.

I don't find that my energy level varies depending on the time of day although it does vary for other reasons. In other words, I could have a high energy level one morning and a low energy level on another morning. I do find that I get the best emotional boost from running in the morning. As much as I love running, finishing a run is even better. When I have a good morning run, I'm set for the day. Of course, my late afternoon runs help me clear my mind from the days activities and reduces my appetite thus helping me avoid eating too much at dinner. As you can probably tell, I'm not too picky on when I run as long as I run.
