A Short Note on Long Underwear Posted: Fri Dec 24, 2004 11:56 am

From Health Day News:

What's the best fabric for long underwear worn in cold weather?

That was the subject of a study done by the Section for Extreme Work Environment in Trondheim, Norway, where they know cold!

The researchers tested a 100 percent polypropylene fabric and mixtures of polyprolylene and wool and wool-cotton polypropylene. They tested the fabrics when they were dry, and after they had been dampened.

And the winner? According to results published in Ergonomics, the choice of fiber didn't make much difference. The thickness of the underwear was the most important factor, regardless of what it was made of.

I have long underwear, but I haven't thought of running in them (under something less ridiculous looking of course!). Has anyone tried that? It seems like it would be a good way to stay warm, but since it's not made of fancy-smancy runner's wonder fabric of some sort, it might be a bad thing (like wearing a cotton t-shirt).

I think their results would apply equally well to running tights meant to be worn as a single layer. The interesting thing to me is that polypro faired no better than wool or wool-cotton, even when wet. That certainly runs counter to my intuition.
