fitting workouts into your day Posted: Wed Jan 12, 2005 11:31 am

The biggest complaint I hear about why runners don't train as much as they feel they should is lack of time. Yet people who are truly committed always seem to find the time somehow. Where do you squeeze your runs into the day? In the morning before work, during lunch, or elsewhere? Do you have to do any creative juggling to make it all fit, or just turn off the TV?

I don't know anyone who is truly too busy to run/excercise on a regular basis. There's always time, most people just choose not to use it for excercise.

I actually save time by running as a part of my every day schedule, both during the week and on weekends.

On weekdays, I run home from work. I just bring my clothes to work, change and take the excess clothes home on a rest day. My commute without running is about 40 minutes door to door. If I run straight home it takes me a little over twenty. On days I run more than 3-4 miles, I simply run past home then turn around where appropriate to get the day's mileage in. By combining my commute and my workout, I kill two birds with one stone.

On weekends, I get up early to run. If I didn't have to run, I'd sleep in, or lay there and watch TV, etc., but by getting up and getting my long-runs in, I've usually had my run and brunch in me before most of my friends are even awake and I have the whole day in front of me.

I'm actually someone that does have a lot of time to excercise even without being efficient with my time, but this way I just have all that excess time free too.

There was a time back around 1990 when I used to ride my bike to work (3 miles...no big deal), take a long lunch and swim two miles, leave my bike at work (in my office) and run home. It was the most fanatical I've ever been about exercise. But even then, I wasn't in as good shape as I've been in since (but better than I am at this exact moment...damn plantar fasciitis).

These days I kind of just go with the flow. I try to run in the morning, but if I have to get an early start on my day then I run in the evenning and then just adjust my other runs so that I get enough rest. Occasionally I'll have to run in the evenning and then again the next morning to adjust my running schedule around my work schedule. So it means some days I run in the dark of morning and some days I run in the dark of evening...and somedays I have the luxury of running when ever I want.

Running to/from work would be a dream. I actually lived close enough to my former job that I could have done it easily, but I had to drive my daughter into day care in the mornings. Maybe I could have used a jogging stroller for that, but I never thought of it.

Now that I work from home, I have the luxury of running pretty much any time of day that I want. I find that mid-morning works best for me, though. That way I've still got plenty of time after my run to get some work done.
