Osgood-Schlatters Disease Posted: Sun May 22, 2005 8:34 pm

I've been poking around this website recently, and I'm curious, have any of ya'll heard about, (or experienced) Osgood-Schlattters Disease? It's a disease in which happens to 1.3% of physically-active teenagers, (sometimes children or adults, however) because our body joints are growing, and we put too much activity on our legs, causing the platella to become inflamed, leaving a bump right in front of the kneecap... It's very painful, and can take years to heal... In extreme cases, it might even require surgery, and I've had it for about two years now... So, out of general curiousity in the world of running, has anyone had any experiences with this? Or has anyone even heard about it?

The only experience I've had with Osgood-Schlatters Disease and the only person I've known to have it was one of my friends back when we were in Junior High (around 1975). I never really asked him about it and only knew that it kept him from being allowed to join the football or basketball teams. I don't recall it being a very big deal for him...it never seemed to bother him. I was always puzzled by this because he was quickest and fastest runner I had ever seen back then. I always thought it was a shame that he wasn't allowed to play sports because he seemed like a natural athlete. It didn't prevent him from running around in Gym class though. My impression was that the restriction on playing sports was to minimize the symptoms of the disease and to allow it to heal without the risk of a sports related injury causing harm.

Sorry I can't share more than this but I have yet to encounter another person in the past 30 years who has this disease, though I've seen or heard mention of it in the media.

Have you done a google search with a search phrase like..."osgood schlatter disease" running sports track?

No, but, come to think of it, it is a good idea... Many thanks.

Well, I've done numerous searches as of late, but I haven't found too much other than two or three ametuer track runners writing a quick fact or two about how it pains them... But I have found a lot of doctors saying how bad of an idea it is to continue running with the disease, becauses it increases the chances of not only greater pain, but knee surgery, and even chronic tibula inflammation... I'll keep looking, though...
