Geroge's Jog 5K race report (W / PICS)

We decided to ride our bikes this morning to the race, which is about 5 miles away. We took the Forest Preserve bike trail that is pretty hilly, so we thought that would be a good warmup, and it was.
It was a beautiful morning, around 68* and very sunny.
We got to the race a little early and got situated with packet pick-up and bathroom breaks, etc. We then run into 'detour', which is always a pleasure... (from another forum)
OK, onto the report. My goal was 21:30, (I ran a 21:34 last year).
Started out wanting to go 7 minute miles for the first 2 miles, as there is a hill at the beginning and one just after the 2 mile mark.
1st mile: 6:46 Crap! I take it a little easier on the 2nd mile and hit there at 14:07, not bad. I now hold pace up the hill and break it loose from there. Running through the sprinkler a good neighbor left out, I'm thinking I wish this were over. Things are starting to hurt and I am breathing heavy.... I kick it into gear anyway and sprint to the finish! 21:37
3 seconds off last year's time, but good enough for a 3rd in the 'old guy' division. A great time was had by all. Here are the pics, as promised:

Awesome race, congratulations! You must have really been pouring it on at the start if you were way under your goal pace while running uphill. How many people were at the race? It looks like a decent crowd, judging from your photos. Congratulations on the age group award too! Now you can wear it around the house with pride, or give it to a little kid. Was that your first AG award?

No, actually once I got into the 45-49 division, I started getting AG awards. I took a first there last year but there was some pretty good competition this year!

That's cool, winning age group awards can be a big motivator. I find the trick to AG awards is to enter obscure races with small fields. OK, I guess that's not much of a trick, but it certainly works. The best I've ever done was to finish 6th overall in a small 5K with 43 runners. That was with a pretty poor finish time, too. If I'd been in similar shape to where I am now, I might have had a podium finish (not that there was actually a podium). Someday it would be cool to outright win a race. I'll just have to stage my own race, and then not invite anyone else to compete! :-)

On my birthday last year I came in 4th overall in race with 109 total finishers. This race had 216 total finishers and I placed 29th. I'm getting there, but I'm not getting any younger.......
