Lance Armstrong gets his ass kicked at NYC Marathon
Posted: Sun Nov 05, 2006 8:08 pm
OK, I guess 2:59 is not exactly getting your ass kicked, but it's quite a bit slower than the numbers a lot of people had been throwing around. I'm not sure how hard he trained for this, but from what I recall reading a while back, it was a pretty decent training effort. Seeing him run "only" 2:59 and really struggle near the finish kind of makes me feel better, in a way. It proves that it does take hard work to succeed at the marathon, even for Lance Armstrong.
He claimed the marathon was tougher than even his hardest days on the Tour de France, and summed the experience up with "I think I bit off more than I could chew, I thought the marathon would be easier."

I'm surprised Lance didn't do better. He was quoted as saying that his longest run was 16 miles and that he had troubling putting in the necessary training. All pretty lame excuses from an athlete of his caliber. Considering Dean Karnazes finished the same marathon in exactly 3 hours and it was his 50th marathon in 50 days, Lance's effort pales slightly.

I think it was just a lot of hype and he couldn't keep up! Granted, 3 hours is nothing to sneeze at, but it wasn't close to the numbers even Lance was throwing around.
Tha marathon is a whole different ballgame as Lance, himself found out.
