after dark running Posted: Sun Dec 12, 2004 11:59 am

For those of you affected by the shorter and shorter daylight hours this time of year, how do you deal with running in the dark? Do you wear headlamps or carry other kinds of lights? Do you wear a reflective vest? Or do you just stick to trails where there are no cars?

I see a lot of people out on the streets after dark with no lights and nothing reflective on. I don't think they realize how invisible they are to cars.

On the road I wear a reflective vest and stay on the sidewalk when possible. On trails the Myo-3 headlamp is my best friend.

I also wear a reflective fest, but it draws a LOT of comments from people passing by. And we're not talking positive comments here. I don't mind too much if it means I don't get run over, but it's amazing how many kids in cars will roll down their windows and shout at me because I look like a walking traffic barricade. Geez!

I drive to a group run on Sunday mornings. This Sunday I was very careful not to run over Lara (not her real name) who runs with us as she was putting in a few extra miles early. Later I went over and asked her to start wearing reflectives, as I was right on top of her before I saw her. She promised to as she said she had nearly been run over twice that morning. This woman puts in 200+ mile weeks, and still doesn't own reflectives. She must be a good car dodger!

I have a headlamp, but it doesn't work well for me. The up and down motion while running shakes it loose, so it ends up hanging in front of my eyes within a quarter mile. I just try to get my runs in during daylight hours as much as possible.

I think people just do not realize how invisible they can be. After all, you can see yourself fine, and you can see other people on foot too. But that's because your eyes are adjusted, and you're moving reasonably slowly. My home street is narrow and has no sidewalks, and when I'm driving it seems like there's always some invisible man walking his dog at dusk that I only see at the last second.
