I think you're fine without water on short runs. The recommended amount of water for marathoners is something like 2 cups (16 ounces) per hour.

Maybe we should just do different kinds of stretching, rather than dismiss it totally. Gentle, warmup-type stretching would seem to be better than extreme calf stretching and that kind of thing.
