After the first few races I did, I was proud to wear the t-shirt around the next day, and keep it in my wardrobe. But now that I've been running for a while, it seems like I'm drowning in t-shirts! I have a whole drawer full of them, and an overflow pile too. Except for a few nice long-sleeve ones, I never wear them anymore either. I was wondering what other people do with their old race shirts, and if they ever wear them, or just throw them away.

I love my race shirts. My favorite is the one I just got from the Marine Corps Marathon. It's high quality and looks great. I wear the shirts around town when they are new. As they get older they become exercise shirts. Finally, when they're worn out I get rid of them. Other than race and concert shirts, I don't think I've bought a t-shirt in years.

Runner's World magazine always has an ad in the back for a place that will make a quilt out of your old race shirts. It sounded a little weird to me, but maybe some people might like it.

I turn mine into rags (they're really good for cleaning bikes) or give them to goodwill. I've found that I just never wear them, unless they're some sort of performance/polyester/dri-wick type thing. I love races that allow you to subtract $5 or $10 from the entry fee in exchange for not getting a t-shirt.

Is that common? I don't think I've ever done a race where the T-shirt could be declined in exchange for a lower entry fee.

I'd take that any day, but I suppose it would make it much more difficult for the race organizers to estimate how many shirts to order.

I wouldn't call it common but it's out there. In the bay area, the Clarksburg 30K (http://www.rungoldmedal.com/clarksburgdetails.html) and Christmas Relays (http://www.pausatf.org/data/2004/ChristmasRelay04.pdf) come to mind.
