Is it too early to start thinking about next year? I guess there are only about 3 weeks left to make your 2005 plans before you have to start working on them. My 2005 goals are:

3:10 marathon
sub-20:00 5K
maintain at least 30 mpw at all times
stay injury free

I'm happy I managed to do both of the last two goals this year, and I hope to repeat in '05. Of the other goals, I'm already pretty close to the sub-20 5K time-- I just need to shave off a few more seconds per mile. The marathon goal will be tougher.

Maintaining mileage consistency throughout the year, and not letting my base slip away after this year's fall marathon before I start into training seriously for spring 2005 ranks right up there. Qualifying for my first Boston with a 3:20 is high on the list. PRs at 10k and 5k would both be nice. But on the flip side, I'd like to enjoy more unstructured runs, where I don't know how far I ran or how long it took me, I just followed some trail or road because I never had before and it looked interesting. I'm not sure how I'm going to reconcile that last one with the earlier goals!

5k under 24 minutes
1/2 marathon under 1:45
marathon under 4 hours
1600 miles for the year
160 mile month
50 mile week
volunteer at at least 3 races, hopefully more

My current 5k PR is stuck at 24:28, and my 1/2 marathon PR is 1:56 and my marathon PR is 4:43 (but I'm in much better shape now!). I volunteered at 3 races this year and it was very satisfying-I highly reccommend it!

It sounds like your times are better at the shorter distances than the longer ones, or else your 5K PR is more recent than the others. According to the running calculator in the tools area here, a 24:28 5K equates to a 1:52 half and a 3:52 marathon. Maybe you need to emphasize long runs more in your training, to help prepare for the longer distances races?

I'll second the recommendation of volunteering at races. I volunteered for the first time at a half-marathon recently, and it was amazing to see the race from a different perspective. I got to say hi to everyone from the race leader to the 14-minute milers. Standing in the woods and saying "turn left ahead" for an hour was a little dull, but seeing all the racers and the looks on their faces more than made up for it. Almost everyone thanked me for being there too, which I thought was nice. Definitely a worthwhile experience.
