What's your 1 mile PR? Posted: Sat Jan 08, 2005 12:43 pm

I've never raced any distance under 5K, so I'm not sure how fast I could really do a mile if I ran it all out. But my personal best is 6:24, set during the opening mile of a longer race. If I did race a mile, I'm guessing I might be able to do it in about 6:00 flat.

Anybody else ever race a mile? What's your best time?

My best was 5:58 about three years ago when my best 5K pace was about 6:36. I plan to run the NYRRC 5th Ave Mile later this year and home to improve a bit on that.

One time about three years ago when I was following what I now consider to be a really half-assed training program that reputedly would get me to a 3:20 marathon, the program said that I should be capable of running a 6:00 mile BEFORE beginning the program. So off I went to the track, and gave it my best. I think I ran something like a 6:04. I'm three years older now, and I'm STILL trying to run that 3:20 marathon. Trying to run a really fast mile a) makes you really feel your age, and b) makes you realize how unbelievably fast a 3:50 mile is or whatever the world record is now.

I just looked it up, and the current 1 mile record is 3:43.13!! It was set in 1999 by Hicham El Guerrouj. I can't even fathom running that fast, over any distance, no matter how short. I don't think I could even run 100 meters at that pace.

Impressive! Was that when you were in school? I hope you won the race!

I am in 8th grade (girl) right now, and haven't ran anything less than a 5k for a while. The last time I ran a mile race, I ran a 5:41. I can run faster now, I just don't know the exact time at the moment.

That's great! Are you in high school or college? Tell us about the race... did you lead the whole way? Any finishing line puking? :-)

Wow, a couple of speedy students here. That's very impressive! How is your 5K time?

I wish I'd stuck with track longer than my one dismal year in high school. I really had no idea at all how the training was supposed to work, and the coach wasn't much help. I ran the 200 and 400, which were totally unsuited for me. I don't even remember any of my times, only that they were really bad and I always came in last!

In 1976 (HS) I ran a 4:19, then switched to 10k as a college runner.

In the early 80s I ran a 5:97 I was around 47 years old at the time. I'm not built for speed but do well for long distances.

You'll have to wait until 6:85 for the answer.

- 4'18, 1976 at James Madison Memorial HS, Madison WI; our school record was an insane 4'06 so I wasn't even close. Never raced a mile since; ran at UW-Madison tho, 1977, and got a 29:39 my freshman year before dropping competitive running (I was wasn't even close to being a scorer for the XC team).
- One fun way to get an idea of what the elite are doing is to watch them on TV and try to move your ARMS as fast as they are doing. Most people get exhausted by the arm swing alone!
- My favorite amazing comparison is to think about Tergat during his WR marathon. For example, we have an open national championship for 10k (road) here in Switzerland. Tergat would have easily won last year's race with the 10K split from his WR marathon, 0:29:58 (see http://www.letsrun.com/2003/tergatberlin.php), but he would have had to keep it up for another hour and a half.
- IMHO, the morale of the story is that the normal distribution has very long, very thin tails.

5:58 in 2001 at age 40, at the 5th Avenue Mile race along Central Park in NYC. It was the first time I ever tried to run a mile as fast as possible. I tried to start off easy but quickly got caught up in the excitement and went out too fast; I felt myself slowing at the end. 5th Avenue rolls up and down a little bit. Also, my shoes weren't tied tight enough, the temperature was a bit warm, I think there was polution in the air...and oh...I was chewing gum at the same time...we all know how hard that is. ;) Sooo...I probably could have done better. Ha! Excuses, excuses, excuses.

I'll have to run that race again sometime and see if I can do better.

I never ran full out for one mile but I used to average 6:37 per mile for my daily ten-mile runs back in the early 80s when I ran. I was about 40 years old back then and weighed about 155 pounds. Today, of course, after letting myself get out of shape, get overweight, and eventually have by-pass surgery, the fastest I've ever run a mile on the track near my house is about 9:45. I can't hold that pace for very long, however, so generally on longer runs and races I'm closer to 11-12 minutes per mile.

Very nice! Do you run at other distances too, or are you a mile specialist?

I also run xc which we do 5ks and my best in that is a 19 41 and this year in indoor i experimented a little in other races because freshman year i was a mile specialist in indoor and i did the 800 this year and ran a 2 24 twice and ran the 1200 in the distance medely and ran a 3 53 but im hopin to run the 3200 because i think i can win a lot of the races when the winning times are around 11 20, and i also want to run the 800 more because im a fast sprinter also and an 800 uses a little more sprint speed than a mile which i run now.

I have never ran a mile on the track, but my quickest 1500m time is 4:30, so i guess i would have run about 4:50 for a mile. I think my quickest xc mile was about 5:17 as a junior, but i haven't raced over that distance for quite a while. Quickest 5km is 17:34.

Hey Runner58 - 4:18 - that is impressive, as was your 10km time. How fast do you run now?

I dominated my old PR of 5 23 by 15 seconds with a 5 08, then ran the 3200 and tied my PR with a 11 41 which was when i was fresh, so hopefully ill break 5 minutes in the 1600 soon. See you guys then!

4:25 or something like that. I ran a 4:07 1500m my sophomore year in college, so it is a conversion from that.

Well, in one season of track and field as an 8th grader, I've successfully run the mile at 5:17 at one point, but, one time during a breaking point in one race, i clipped another guy's heel, and I fell and hurt my knee, and finished with a time of 6:38, so that really hurt my average and lowered it to 5:40... Hopefully that doesn't happen again though...
